UL 2596 Test Equipment for Battery Enclosure Materials
Compliance
UL 2596
UL 2596 is a test method for thermal and mechanical performance of battery enclosure materials, evaluates electric vehicle (EV) battery enclosure materials. It provides two test methods:
Torch and Grit (TaG) Test
The test specimen is exposed to 3kW flame and grit blast generated by a torch burner, in 20 cycles. The temperature and mechanical damage are monitored to determine the material performance.
Battery Enclosure Thermal Runaway Test
The test specimen is exposed to the thermal runaway generated by 25 pieces of 18650 battery cells, which 2 of 25 battery cells are tigered by heated film. The temperature, pressure and mechanical damage are monitored to determine the material performance.
The test methods simulate the temperatures, pressures and jet flames that may impact to the enclosure material when the battery undergoes thermal runaway. It enables testing of the material with a sheet material instead of an entire battery assembly which can reduce development cost and time.
Torch and Grit (TaG) Test Equipment
Features:
Integrated test bench, with an opening test platform to reduce heat accumulation.
Test area with a surrounding safety shield, liftable design, convenient for specimen installation and equipment maintenance.
A stainless steel hood mounted above the test platform, collects the combustion gases during the test. Ventilation capacity is adjustable.
USA torch burner, generates jet flame and grit blasting flame.
The burner has a diameter of 28.6mm, with 30 gas supply ports and 78 oxygen supply ports and central grit blasting supply port.
The burner supplies a 3kW test flame and with/without a grit blasting at a speed of 1.5g/s.
Equips with electric spark igniter for ignition.
Provides mass flow controller to control methane flow, oxygen flow and air flow individual.
Methane mass flow controller, range 0-10L/min, accuracy of 2% F.S.
Oxygen mass flow controller, range 0-50L/min, accuracy of 2% F.S.
Air mass flow controller, range 0-100L/min, accuracy of 2% F.S.

Battery Enclosure Thermal Runaway Test Equipment
Features:
Test chamber, made of A36 structural steel, with an internal dimension of 100mm x 100mm x 89mm.
The top side of the chamber is open and the test sample is secured onto the open side during the test.
The midpoint of one side of the chamber is using a vent orifice to release pressure generated during the test.
A Type K 24AWG insulated thermocouple is used to measure the internal temperature of the test chamber.
A Type K 24AWG insulated thermocouple is used to measure the external temperature of the test sample.
A pressure transducer is used to measure the internal pressure of the test chamber.
Thermal runaway trigger device, heating up the initialing cells at the rate of 4~7 °C.
A PID temperature controller controls the heating of the film heater, the range of 0 to 1,000°C, with an accuracy of 0.1°C.
Two Type K 24AWG insulated thermocouples are used to measure the surface temperature of the initialing cells individually.
The temperature of the initialing cells are monitored during the test.
Data acquisition system, collects the temperature, pressure, and time at a rate of 10 samples per second.
Window based operation software, with the functions:
Records the internal temperature of the test chamber.
Records the external temperature of the test specimen.
Records the surface temperature of the initialing cells.
- Records the pressure of the test chamber.
- Control the heating of flexible film heaters at a specific rate.
- Records the time, and generates the time-synchronized plots of temperature & pressure.
- Generates the maximum temperature & pressure.
- Report export and management.
